The OPAAC is pleased to present a conversation on “Youth & the Arts” with Mr.John Conde and Mr. Peter Kahn. George Bailey, PhD. will moderate the conversation
John Condne has been the film and video teacher at Oak Park and River Forest High School for twelve years. Condne received Masters Degrees in film/video from Columbia College and in teaching & secondary education from Concordia University. Condne works with many current and former OPRF students on productions. Presently, John is working on a new documentary with filmmaker Steve James. The film will cover OPRF’s decades-old racial academic achievement gap.
Peter Kahn has been a full-time Spoken Word Educator at Oak Park/River Forest High School for the past twelve years and runs the largest school-based Spoken Word Club in the world, which he founded in 1999. He co-founded the London Teenage Poetry Slam in 2002 and the Spoken Word Education Training Program as a Visiting Fellow at Goldsmiths-University of London in 2012. A Featured Speaker at the NCTE Annual Convention, “Coach of the Year” for Louder Than a Bomb, and the coach of Nova from the LTAB documentary. For nearly twenty years, Peter has used poetry to get students to engage in school and to transform their lives in Chicago, Oak Park and London. Peter is busy preparing the OPRF’s team for the Louder than a Bomb 2016 Youth Poetry Festival.
